Season 2 of The Mandalorian will arrive at the end of 2020 on Disney. The protagonists working on the series based on the Star Wars universe are quite talkative, we already know a lot about the new episodes that await us. We offer you a summary of everything we know so far, and there is much to be said for.
The Mandalorian is an original disney series, exclusive to this platform. Season 1 of the show, which is one of the main calling products of the new SVOD service, consists of eight episodes, all of which are already available. Disney has opted for a different strategy than its competitors by publishing one episode per week, where the standard on streaming video-on-demand platforms has become to launch an entire season at once. A way for Disney to retain its audience, which does not unsubscribe after a month, or even at the end of the 7 days of free trial.
In any case, spectators are now waiting for the season 2, which has been confirmed. We have gathered all the information about it for you a summary of what is known in this file.
📆 What is the release date of season 2 of The Mandalorian?
The season 2 is likely to be October 2020 and should not be delayed. Filming for season 2 of The Mandalorian began in 2019 and is already complete. The last scenes were shot in March 2020. The next season of the series is therefore not heavily impacted by the COVID-19 epidemic, which has forced a halt to filming around the world. Rick Famuyiwa, director, and Hal Hickel, visual effects supervisor, explained that they still have to adapt to perform the post-production stages in telework, which adds a constraint. However, they assured that Season 2 would not be discounted because of these difficulties and that no delays were expected.
We even get an approximate exit window. Showrunner Jon Favreau announced a few months ago that the rest of the show would be available in the fall of 2020. Since then, we have had a little more specific explanations through Robert Iger, Executive Chairman and Chairman of the Walt Disney Company Board of Directors. According to him, the season of The Mandalorian will be released on Disney during the month of October.
🧮 How many episodes will Season 2 count?
As with season 1, eight episodes await us. We even already know their titles, which we indicate below (French titles are unknown to date).
- (Chapter 1: The Search)
- (Chapter 2: The Confrontation)
- (Chapter 3: The Bounty)
- (Chapter 4: The Republic)
- (Chapter 5: The Loyalist)
- (Chapter 6: The Sorcerer)
- (Chapter 7: The Return)
- (Chapter 8: The Empire)
The “1 week, 1 episode” model is expected to be renewed for this season 2.
❓ What is the story of the series?
The series takes place in the Star Wars universe, after the second trilogy of the Skywalker saga in chronological order of the story (and thus after the first trilogy in chronological order of release). The plot takes place for a while after the fall of the Galactic Empire and the creation of the New Republic, and 25 years before the events of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.
If you’re reading these lines, you’re probably looking forward to season 2 of The Mandalorian after enjoying the premiere. But if you haven’t seen Season 1 yet, be warned: we’ll mention some important moments of it in the following paragraphs. If you want to avoid spoilers and not have the plot disclosed, skip this part and resume reading the article in the next section.
Before anticipating the scenario of Season 2, let’s start with a brief reminder of the facts of Season 1. Orphaned, Din Djarin is taken by the Mandalorians, who train him and train him. He then became a recognized and respected bounty hunter. One of his missions leads him to capture a character nicknamed by the community “Baby Yoda”, a child of the mothere race than Master Yoda. He must deliver it to Moff Gideon, a remnant of the ancient Empire. But remorseful and after being saved by Baby Yoda, who discovers strength despite his young age, he decides to protect and take under his wing the little creature, thus drawing the wrath of the sponsor, Moff Gideon.
At the end of Season 1, the hero of the series, nicknamed “Mando” managed to defeat (temporarily) Moff Gideon, at the cost of the loss of several allies. A superior of the Mandalorian order, which was decimated, reminds him that by the code to which he swore allegiance, he is now the Baby Yoda’s father until he is reunited with his family. Mando’s new priority is thus found: to bring back the strange being to his family, of whom he knows nothing. This is how Season 1 ends.
Let’s move on to season 2. Of course, most of the plot is kept secret. But by cross-referencing statements from actors, directors or people connected to the project with what we already know, we can go forward on certain points. The red thread will therefore be the search for the people from which Baby Yoda is from. A task that will be disrupted by Moff Gideon, who survived the crash of his ship and who will want in addition to recovering Baby Yoda to study it, wanting revenge on Mando.
Gideon, who, as we realize in the final moments of season 1, has more than one trick in his bag. He managed to escape from the wreckage of his ship with the help of a black lightsaber. A weapon that is not unknown to followers of the extended Star Wars universe and which should take on great importance in Season 2. The darksaber was created more than a millennium ago by Tarre Vizsla, who was the first Mandalorian to join the Jedi Order. It is a symbol of power, and its owner can claim to unite all the Mandalorian clans under its banner. Seeing him in the hands of Moff Gideon does not bode well, and one imagines that Din Djarin will be very interested in getting it back. The importance that this sword will take in the plot is confirmed by the arrival of a new character in the cast, but we tell you more about it a little later.
Star Wars isn’t just about lightsaber fights, spin-offs, a work of the extended universe and now The Mandalorian have shown us well. But there will be a laser sabre duel in the next season of the Disney series, a confidence slipped by Giancarlo Esposito, the actor playing Moff Gideon. No more details at the moment, but we’re bound to be looking forward to seeing that.
👩🏼 🤝 🧑🏼 What is the cast of season 2?
The cast is expected to be a serious boost this season, including the appearance of well-known characters from the Star Wars universe, some even part of the Skywalker mythology.
Let’s start with Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica, The Flash, Riddick), who doubles as Bo Katan Kryze animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. This time she will directly play the character in The Mandalorian. Bo-Katan Kryze is a Mandalorian, and not just any one since she managed to unite several clans of her divided people after taking control of the darksaber that was mentioned earlier. She lost it to Moff Gideon and is expected to play an important role in Season 2.
Rosario Dawson (Daredevil and other Marvel Cinematic Universe series) will play the role ofAhsoka Tano. She is originally from the planet Shili, but the Jedi order spotted her at a very young age and she is then transferred to Coruscant for Jedi training. At the beginning of the Clone Wars, she became Anakin Skywalker’s padawan ( apprentice). Apart from Baby Yoda, the presence of the force and the Jedi was very limited in season 1 of The Mandalorian, it seems that it will be strengthened during season 2.
Temuera Morrison is expected to make an appearance next season, but it should be a cameo and not an important secondary role. As a reminder, he played Jango Fett in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones. It had been dbeheaded at the end of the film by Mace Windu under the bemused eyes of his son (which is actually a young version of his own clone), Boba Fett. It is precisely the latter that Temuera Morrison will play in season 2 of The Mandaloran.
Michael Biehn (Terminator, Aliens) finally takes on the role of a bounty hunter who has crossed Mando’s path in the past.
We have reviewed the arrival of the new heads already known, let’s now move on to those who will make the return.
Pedro Pascal (Oberyn Martell in Game of Thrones, you may not have recognized him since we only see his face for a few seconds during season 1, Mando categorically refusing to remove his helmet in the presence of other living beings) of course resumes his role of Din Djarin. Ditto for the most important secondary characters: Gina Carano in the role of the former rebel Cara Dune, Carl Weathers as the leader of the bounty hunter guild Greef Carga and finally Giancarlo Esposito as Moff Gideon, the antagonist.
We were pretty sure we’d see them again, so it’s confirmed. But they’re not the only season 1 heads to return in Season 2. Attention, among the characters we will quote below, some were left for dead or in an uncomfortable situation in previous episodes, their presence in the cast is therefore a plunder (even if the possibility of flashback is not to be ruled out completely either).
Emily Swallow (The Mentalist, Supernatural) will be present in Season 2. “Who?”, you might ask? This is the actress hidden under the helmet of The Armurier, the one with whom Mando took his orders and came to forge pieces of equipment. At the end of the first season, it allows Din Djarin’s team to escape by holding back the imperialists. An action that looked like a final sacrifice and was then cheap to give her skin, but the actress is present for a second season.
Also back, the mercenaries who betrayed Mando in the middle of season 1. Bill Burr returns as the unbearable Mayfield, after Harry Potter and Game of Thrones, Star Wars: Natalia Tena confirms that she loves big licenses by reprising her role as Xi’an. Finally, the bully Burg played by Clancy Brown also makes his comeback. All these beautiful people will probably want revenge on Mando, who locked them in a prison in the New Republic.
Julia Jones, in the shoes of the villager namedOmera who seems to have fallen in love with Mando when he was looking for a safe haven planet to hide himself and Baby Yoda, is also in the cast. So did Omid Abtahi (American Gods, Better Call Saul, Star Wars: The Clone Wars), who plays the Dr Pershing, in the service of Moff Gideon and whose life was spared by Mando.
All this information about the cast tells us a lot about what we can expect to see in season 2.
➕ Is Season 3 of The Mandalorian already planned?
Yes, there will indeed be a third season. While the broadcast of season 2 still seems a little distant, Disney has already started to floor on it. The pre-production phase has been started: showrunner Jon Favreau has started writing this new salvo of episodes that will certainly be available for viewing at the end of 2021, and production is in the process of working on the issue of sets and environments. We will probably hear about a possible season 4 after the release of Season 2.
